Literary Art

My latest effort was in undertaking something a bit different.

A friend and previous client contacted me recently to see if I would design a bookplate for him. You know, those decorative affixed labels you’ll sometimes find on the inside cover?

Well, he wanted something in the style of Rockwell Kent (some examples of this great illustrator appear below).

…a Tall Order! But, I was willing to try… This author wanted to show a figure surrounded by books, a version of himself in graphic form. The image rose from embryonic thumbnail (seen above, at the top) to the finished illustration, which took considerable time to complete. I presented this sketch as our basis…

The finish…

I know it’s a stroke different than Rockwell Kent’s, but the author was, indeed, thrilled.
