A departure from the daily routine

Sketches are the first step in developing finished art. Here is a look in on the process with a commission for a real estate firm.

In 2012, I was contacted by Gregory Malphurs at Soupcan, a design firm who were tasked with creating a brochure for the financial company called Hines. I was keen to take this drawing assignment on, as I enjoy departures from labors creating Wall Street Journal hedcut style portraits.

Hines is a privately owned, international real estate firm that has provided the highest level of quality, service and value to its clients and investors for more than 57 years.

We worked pretty hard developing the concepts for this project, with many explorations in the sketch phase. This eagle sketch is one which was not chosen for finished art…

The project was complicated, expansive, and fun. I used up a lot of ballpoint ink doing those sketches!
