For this, last in the series of presidential art, we focus on more recent times.
In 2012, I had the honor of getting commissioned for a Harper’s Magazine cover. They wanted the Commander-in Chief in a close-up image, with a look of concern in his expression. I presented this sketch:
The finished art came out like this:
And the cover with my illustration in place…
I had drawn Mr. Obama previously. A client needed the president’s portrait for some tee-shirts he was producing. Apparently, a number of these tops were in attendance at the first inaugural event in Washington. I was glad to be part of it!
This was the image on the shirts…
On a not-so-happy note, I was hired by the New York Daily News to create an election-eve illustration of the Kerry/Edwards ticket. Mr. Kerry, of course, is still out there making news. Mr. Edwards, not so much. Anyway, here’s the sketch:
The finish, I thought, came out well. The election, that’s another story!
