Illustrations for Publishing

Creating illustrations for publishing stretches the creative reflexes.

I’ve worked on many book projects over the years. A couple of days ago, I received a package from Australia. It was a copy of a new literary work, with my artwork prominently displayed. The publisher, Black Inc., bought usage rights to one of my illustrations, and made it look terrific:

A curious company called Despair Inc. publishes a lot of tongue-in-cheek material, putting a spin on those motivational posters you see in the workplace occasionally. Here’s a page from “The Art of Demotivation”, with my illustration:

Another publisher of light, witty books is Quirk Publishing. They’ve hired me for quite a few projects. Here is the cover of a book that was released just in time for Valentine’s Day:

A heavy seller for Quirk was “The Encyclopedia of Guilty Pleasures”, which I illustrated:

Quirk would also occasionally release novelty offerings, like The Amazing Magical Wonder Deck:

This project was a lot of fun to work on. I had to graphically represent how ‘the moves’ are performed by parlor magicians. Here are some of those illustrations:

Lastly, pertaining to books, I have a client who is a book collector. He asked me to design a bookplate for him. Here it is…

  1. This design is incredible! You obviously know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
