At Brooks Brothers
Brooks Brothers, the famous men's clothing retailer, retained me to work on an ad campaign from 1991 to 1993. The design firm creating these print ads was Toth Design, in Boston. Mike Toth was putting these classy pieces together for publication in the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, among others.
Made For Stipple Illustrations
Stipple illustration is very well suited for showcasing this kind of product because it combines a tonal range that line drawings can't match with an elegance that photography simply doesn't capture. It was right up my alley, and together, I think we bowled a perfect game. These images are all taken from my personal photostatic prints of the original illustrations created for Brooks Brothers. The original, hand-drawn art boards are locked away in Toth's vaults somewhere! (The ads displayed here are scanned from photostatic prints from Toth studio, as they would have been released to the publishers for printing.)
Prices are, I presume, a bit higher today...

I was sorry to see this project come to an end-- it was a joy to craft these distinctive spots for such a distinguished company.
But, in the world of advertising, a two-to-three year run is all one can possibly hope for.
...On to the next big thing!
