Stanford White, Portrait Art

   portrait art, Kevin Sprouls Here's another from my Reader's Digest gig, while I was moonlighting from doing hedcut portraits for The Wall Street Journal at my day job. Like last week's post, we are still talking architecture here. The subject: Stanford White. This was one heavy-duty architect, as the Encyclopaedia Britannica explains... "Among his more important commissions in New York City were the Madison Square Garden (1891), the Washington Memorial Arch (1891), the New York Herald Building (1892), and the Madison Square Presbyterian Church (1906). White was a versatile artist who designed jewelry, furniture, and a wide range of interior decorations. An enthusiastic and extroverted man, he was noted for his lavish entertainments. He was shot to death at Madison Square Garden by Henry Kendall (“Harry”) Thaw, the jealous husband of the showgirl Evelyn Nesbit, with whom White had had a love affair."The portrait art... 

Looking at these original illustrations from the old days, I can see that i was not too concerned then about erasing my tracing lines. In this detail, you can just make out the contour lines that I laid down to guide my pen strokes.
