Aircraft Line Art

This time, some illustrations I’ve created featuring line art of Aircraft. Jetliners, in fact. I made an illustration for the cover of an Annual Report for GATX corporation, a big company involved in various modes of transport. Here it is…

GATX Annual Report cover

I did the work for Sandra DuBois’s design studio in Chicago. The inside of the Annual Report featured some of my well-known portraits that I pioneered at The WSJ. After I left the Journal, they were kind enough to commission a drawing from me for United Airlines. The illustration shows two new Airbus jets cruising through the heavens…

Next a few illustrations from an ad campaign I was involved with for American Airlines. The Airline was launching a new local service, called American Eagle. Here is what the ads looked like:

I illustrated several of these… a jet flying over various locales. The detail in these drawings was very high, but I enjoyed the craftmanship involved.

American Eagle over Wilmington, NC

Above, a seascape in flowing lines. These images ran in newspapers in the nineties, when black-and-white ads were common.

American Eagle over Cityscape

The image above took a lot of imagination! It’s purely made up. A complex scene here, with suburbs, highways, a river and cityscape. Fun to draw!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief survey of my art of aviation. Please stay tuned (Subscribe!) to get the next installment.
