( To view the initial Post in this series, please click on https://cyan-sunfish-e2wr.squarespace.com/config/pages/620a981b1f3c5f26f4888ee8 ). Let’s get back to my collection of WSJ Art…
WSJ hedcut
Above, a portrait of George Palmiter, for a story dubbed “River”. Likely a Page 1 human interest story. This is a densely detailed hedcut portrait. One of my better renderings. On the other side of the scale, here is a clinically minimal illustration showing some lethal military weapons:
Each of these ran at ½-column wide. The simplicity of the drawings make these deadly weapons look like toys. The clouds surrounding the missile were drawn with the help of a circle template. The Journal also covered developments in the field of Architecture…
This drawing was done at a small scale, at about 3” x 4”. It depicts the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. The newly constructed edifice was considered revolutionary. We’ll wrap this post with two “Human Interest” tableaux:
The above image features Hutterite Women, from Page 1. These ladies are showing off their home made apparel. I enjoy drawing such interesting subjects, like the fellow below…
This image was also a Page 1, full-column illustration in The Wall Street Journal. A thatcher somewhere in England who clearly has fun on the job.
More next time!
