Illustrations of Couples, Part 2

This time, more portrait illustrations of couples. I think you’ll get a kick out of these…

Mary Astor on right

The above illustration appeared in The New Yorker magazine in the early 1990’s. I thought it would be fun to colorize it. Here is the result:

Colorized Still with Mary Astor

Taking my black and white art into being colorized art was an arduous process. I had a production camera in those days. I would make a transparency of the b&w art, then create an underlay with watercolors and colored pencils. I’d then place the transparency over the base, colored image, and arrive at what you see above. Another couple who are rather well-known were created using the same technique:

La Belle et Le Bete

The illustration above also appeared in The New Yorker, in black+white. This classic of Jean Cocteau is a family favorite, so I was happy to create this homage to the original Beauty and the Beast film.

The Kiss

I did illustrate the above image for a client a long time ago. Quite exuberant!

Dan Akroyd and Patti LuPone

Dan Akroyd and Patti LuPone from a production in early-90’s New York. This one also ran in the New Yorker. The original now hangs in my barrister friend’s house in the suburbs of Dublin, Ireland. I made him a gift of the art.

Lastly, one of my first commissions from the New Yorker. In a Pinter play then running in the city, here are David Strathairn and Jean Stapleton…

The Birthday Party

I enjoyed creating these distinctive images shortly after departing my ‘Day Job’ at the WSJ. I hope you’ve enjoyed them, too!
