Meanwhile, in the Foothills
Here I am, on the cover of this month’s local magazine. (as Keith Richards wrote: “All Publicity is Good Publicity.”) The reporter, Storme Smith, contacted me to ask if I’d be interested in being interviewed. I agreed to have him over to my studio for a visit. He was a proficient writer and photographer. The following images display the article:
I’ve collected the art pieces shown in the article to show them in their complete form… Hope you enjoy them.
Lizard Map for WWF
To compensate me for the drawing, The World Wildlife Fund paid me $500. and 50 Tee-shirts…
Robotic Morf
The above illustration was created for The Wall Street Journal, where I was Lead Illustrator…
Bell Lion
I worked on a major ad campaign for The Bell phone company in Canada. Above is the main character of the campaign. Aside from the illustrated print images, there was also a series of television ads featuring actors wearing automated animal heads. It was brilliant work.
It looked so much like the Kerry team would win, that the New York Daily News hired me to draw a portrait of John Kerry and John Edwards, for the front page. As we all know, it didn’t quite come out that way!
Saturn Engine
The now defunct automobile company, Saturn, hired me to create a series of illustrations for their promotional catalog. Above is a cutaway illustration of the Saturn engine.
Space Toys
Another illustration for the WSJ. One of the editors of the paper was kind enough to pose for me… those are his pants-cuffs and Wingtips.
WSJ Executive Portrait
Frank Lloyd Wright
While working at The Journal, I also did some moonlighting at Reader’s Digest. Above is a portrait I created for their philatelic department. It was used on a printed piece in a “First Day of Issue” offering.
Above, a portrait on my desk at the time of the interview.
Finally, an illustration for Time magazine. It was created as a cover design, but the story got bumped due to a last-minute breaking news event, and so it never ran… That is the sometimes precarious nature of the illustration business!
