New Illustrations - Pizza Packaging

Back at the end of November, I was asked to bid on a job for a raft of Illustrations to go on Pizza Packaging. After being awarded the project, the A/D, James Bridges, Set me to work on sketches…

The big challenge with this assignment was to be coarse — not my usual high-detail game! All images had to print on cardboard and be scanned by the human eye quickly at small-scale. It was easy. Here is a finished illustration of the above sketch, “Pepperoni”:

Although there were to be only 14 different pizza varieties, I had to draw many more illustrations, as the images would be combined in diverse groupings. I completed the project early last month. Here are a few examples, with their sketch counterparts…

One of the illustrations became a challenge… it was the Pickles. To get to the finished, approved image, I had to make two unsuccessful attempts. I didn’t even submit them, as I knew they weren’t working. This is the one that did:
