Portraits of Women
This week, I present a collection of my portraits of women. Creating portraits of women is both a pleasure and a challenge. One must be careful to properly capture delicate features, expression, and the rendering of hairstyle. Here is an example of a portrait with the hair predominating…
Portrait of a Lady
As you can see the hair shown in this drawing was half of the work in completing this work. This illustration is in my collection, but I don’t recall who commissioned the art. It appears to have been created for use in a magazine. The stipple technique I used here was pioneered by me in my days as lead illustrator at The Wall Street Journal. The following portrait, my rendering of Madame de Pompadour, was published by the Journal during my tenure…
Madame de Pompadour
At The WSJ, we had to keep the drawings fairly heavy, to hold up when the copies of the art were sent out to the handful of printing plants around the country by parcel. If the story was ‘hot’, we’d be forced to send images by fax, with the predictable result of deteriorating the image.
Another newspaper hired me for a portrait years after I’d left The Journal. A London newspaper, The Daily Mail, wanted an illustration of one of their journalists for a feature column…
Portrait of a Journalist
Here again, the hairstyling makes this an interesting image, to my eye. Note the mole under her chin. I like paying attention to minute details like that.
Portrait of Michele Preston
The portrait above is a bit of a departure style-wise. This was one of three portrait illustrations that I created for Personal Computing magazine. See my previous post, /ink-rhythm-blog/2021/07/three-portraits-for-personal-computing It is executed in a bold, graphic technique. I enjoyed playing with background stylings. Note my monogram on right.
Portrait of Chef Judy Joo
Back to normal! Above, a clean portrait drawing of Chef Judy Joo, created for Men’s Fitness, a Rodale publication. You can view my previous posting on this ‘How-To’ installment here /ink-rhythm-blog/

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief survey of my portraits of women as much as I enjoyed creating them!
Until next time…
