Kevin Sprouls, Hedcut

self-portrait-wp-thmb This is the first of a weekly series featuring the portraits I've made, widely known as Hedcuts. The term hedcut has long been in use at The Wall Street Journal. It refers to the small b&w illustrated portraits that have regularly appeared in the newspaper since well before I arrived there in 1979.Here is my self-portrait, from 2008. I like to do a self-portrait perhaps every 5 to 6 years. This one was created from a direct-flash snapshot made with the iPhone of the day. The lighting here is the toughest to deal with in my business, as there are very poorly defined lights and shadows, or Chiarascuro. I don't take this one out much, but I thought I would share it here.self-portrait, 2008Stay tuned for more hedcut portraits in coming weeks...
