Sketch Collection: Conceptual, Metaphorical, & How To Illustration

Another dip into the large sketch collection from various illustration projects, in the Kevin Sprouls Sketch Folder. Because my teacher told me to save them! This time, I’ve got samplings which fall into three categories: Conceptual Illustration, How-to, and Metaphorical Illustration. Let’s take the last first.

Next, a client commissioned me to draw a set of five figures involving tree imagery.These were among the most detailed illustrations I had ever created. Even the sketches were complicated! You hear about the difficulty of drawing hands or ears, but, for me, trees are the most challenging.  The image above represents the diversified offerings of this particular client. Now, for some Conceptual Illustration— these can be fun. I don’t recall the client I created these for, and they were not all approved for finished art, but, here goes…These fantasy machine sketches represent a Silicon Motor, and a Smell-Sensor.Here I took another swipe at the Sensor — I think the client liked this one better:Above, a Sci-Fi exploration of a spot illustration idea. Teleportation is the concept.

Finally, the How-to section. I likely did this sketch on a commission for Rodale Press, Prevention magazine, perhaps. Six steps to a Facial Massage. Take a Deep Breath -- RELAX!
