Graphic Logo Designs for a Cause
Opportunities to do graphic logo designs for a cause are a rare and welcome thing. using your abilities for such things feeds your soul.
The humble beginning of a cause
Many years ago, my daughter learned to ride the unicycle with her beach-buddy. It was Summer on Long Beach Island, 1999. They were both about 12 years of age, so they learned quickly. Towards the end of that summer, they decided to challenge themselves and ride the entire 18-mile length of LBI. A family friend suggested that they might want to raise money for a worthy cause by getting sponsors for the challenge. Thus, The Annual LBI Unithon was born.
The graphic logo designs for a cause
I lent a hand by designing the original logo:We got shirts printed, and a team of 4 Unicyclists took to the road. With our efforts, we collected a couple of hundred dollars or so from family, friends, local vendors, and strangers. We donated the money to the local environmental group, Alliance for a Living Ocean, or ALO.
Unithon Logo through the years
I could spin many yarns of these annual one-wheel rallies, but I will spare you, Dear Reader! My task here is to share with you some of the many designs that have graced Unithon jerseys over the years. Here is a small collection of my designs…Going for 2-color printing, I sub-imposed the number ‘6’ on the original logo. We printed it on a black tee, the original logo knocked out to white, and it was impressive. Here it is in print, front and back:
This shirt bears the stains of effort. Likely only worn that one day, long ago!
This design utilized a local landmark, the Lighthouse on LBI, known as ‘Old Barney.' Here it is, as printed:
The logo for the 8th Unithon was interesting. I tried to express the number ‘8’ as part of the design.
It printed like this.
LBI Unithon Number Nine logo was much like the 6th…
The very last Annual LBI Unithon was in 2015. It was #17. A pretty good run for an event initiated by two 12-year-old Beach-Buddies. The two friends rode in most of these rallies. I even learned to ride eventually and completed 8 miles of the course that year. Here is the last iteration of the logo.
The future of the Unithon
This summer, I plan to resume the Unithon, with the help of enthusiastic riders. I’m hoping that we may continue the tradition and that the 2016 omission will prove but a small hiccough in this worthy enterprise.
Unithon charitable giving
Over the years we raised upwards of ten thousand dollars for the ALO of Long Beach Island. This year, we are hoping to direct funds raised to a local anti-opioid abuse organization. Ride On!https://youtu.be/9URLR2jj5sE
