Illustrations for Time Magazine

The following illustrations were made for and published in Time International magazine...Here is King Juan Carlos, of Spain. All of the color of these images were created with watercolor paint and colored pencils. Over the top of it all, I used the pointillistic stipple style of portrait illustration that I developed for The Wall Street Journal, known as the hedcut. It takes considerable labor to assemble these full-color illustrations. I enjoy creating them and viewing their luminosity. Comrad Stalin watches over the scene.A few years ago, The domestic Time magazine asked me to do a cover illustration. That really got me excited! I threw everything I had into it. It was a bit of a rush job. I think I had only two or three days to finish the art. Then a couple of strange things happened... I shipped the art to Time, Inc. in New York via Fed-Ex. It was a rush job and so had to arrive on time. Well, the driver somehow failed to deliver the illustration. The package was lost for a few hours. In the meantime, the news cycles shifted, and the editors decided to feature another story on the cover. Quite the missed opportunity. I was paid in full, but it was a disappointment nonetheless! Anyway, here is the finished piece:If you look carefully, you may just be able to make out the filaments in the paper that I drew. Another Adventure in Illustration!
