A Project Long Delayed, Part 2

This is part 2 of the project I’m working on — an unfinished book I wrote and illustrated when I was 21 years old. I have reworked some images, and lightly edited the text. The original copy has been replaced and re-set, for layout purposes in the computer context. I have had some elements colorized by my associate, Sarah Jones…

Sarah does great work. The idea here is to have a decorative border on every page, without the design elements overpowering the illustrations or text, which are in black-and-white. My book-designer, Michael Havekotte, was against this lavish use of decoration, but I wanted to remain faithful to the original concept. Here is another illustrated page, image drawn in 1977…

You can see the pointillistic styling at play here — I would later bring the technique to make portrait and other drawings for The Wall Street Journal. Here is another full-page illustration from 1977…

Next, the final illustration of the book, also from the original period of the project. This illustration was actually unfinished, so I had to complete it recently to include it…

A joyous scene in this ‘happily ever after’ fairy tale. In Part 3, I will unveil the new art I have made for this project. Don’t miss it!
