Let’s statt with a high and mighty hedcut portrait… none other than Pope John Paul II:

WSJ hedcut

This ½-column insert appeared likely upon the occasion of a papal visit to the U.S. I’m sure it appeared on page one in the WSJ, Going from the sacred to the profane, here is my drawing of a cocktail - the World-Wide Heavyweight Champion of them all, [according to David Wondrichthe Gin Martini:

I don’t recall what the story was about… Cocktail Culture?

A full-column image above, of a sailboat… “Bottoms Up, and Weigh Anchor!”…

On the domestic front, The Journal covered the introduction of the Snugli…

This carefully crafted image appeared as a one-column insertion. Both my kids were lucky enough to enjoy the Snugli, a long time ago!

Lastly, an image of the conceptual kind, which appeared in 2-column-format in Section Two of The Wall Street Journal. I relied a bit on my Physics studies in high school for this one (Thanks Mr. Jankowsky!). The audience is learning about a new invention, while being urged to invest in this ‘guaranteed’ money-maker!

See you next week…
