Humorous Illustration, Part 1

This time, a lighter side of Illustration. I was hired by my former employer, The Wall Street Journal, to create a few images, including these two:

This drawing was called “Franken-fish: it illustrated a story about genetic-engineering, and its possibly outcomes.

This image illustrates the plight of over-worked couples who find themselves having to take home work, and the toll that takes on a relationship - “Two Sleepy People”.

The following illustration was created for a client who wished to pictorialize the familiar metaphor,”When Hell Freezes Over”…

Let me direct your attention to a detail that I included in the drawing:

I am sure I was channeling the very funny ‘criminal master-mind’ of the Wallace and Grommet series - the evil Penguin! He’s having a smoke, as there is not much else to do!

There used to be a Men,s magazine from Canada called TORO. They hired me to the above take on Astrology, entitled “Horrorscope”. You might consider it my homage to Edward Gorey.

Lastly, my stab at cartoon humor…

I was working for The New Yorker magazine at the time, doing ‘serious’ illustrations, and thought I would submit the above image. I thought it was funny — they, apparently, did not!

More funnies next week…
